Rebecca Gayle Marks

Rebecca (Becky) Gayle Marks, who loved to be called Nona by her grandchildren, departed her loving family on September 8, 2021, at the age of 74 in Meridian, Idaho. Becky was born in Burlington, Vermont on August 24, 1948, to George and Marie Champney. Her father was a Sargent Major in the military, so she and her older brother, Gerald, grew up as what she called an "army brat" traveling frequently in her younger years before settling on the family farm in Carlton, Oregon. She graduated from Yamhill-Carlton High School and formed life-long friendships with her classmates. She was a single mother to her three-daughters: Dawn Kinnaman (Scott), Janelle Lubbes, Tawnya Lubbes, who were her pride and joy. Not a conversation went by where she was not updating her friends about her children. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Eastern Oregon State College in La Grande, Oregon in 1992 and moved to Pendleton, Oregon to begin her career as a case manager for Umatilla County Mental Health shortly afterward. In 1996, after 8 years of partnership, she married the love of her life, Normand (Norm) Marks and they enjoyed many adventures together including traveling, attending community events, and spending time at the Eagles and Elks lodges. She loved Pendleton and quickly became a fixture in the community. She also worked as a union shop steward for AFCME and AFLCIO and later in transportation for Umatilla County Corrections. She had a great compassion for others and a heart to help people, often those from undeserved populations. Many would say she was a "boots on the ground/all hands-on deck" kind of gal. Perhaps her greatest achievement was serving as the longest standing member of the Pendleton City Council from 2009-2020. She was passionate about serving her community and would often challenge the status quo. She loved participating in local events and supporting the Pendleton fire station and her beloved Pendleton Airport. She was a member of the Eagles and Elks lodges and participated in the foster grandparent program. She loved her community and her community loved her. In 2020, she moved to Meridian, Idaho to be closer to family and to get care for Norm at an assisted living facility. She quickly became part of the community and joined the food services board as a representative for other residents. She was cherished by the employees and residents. Becky's favorite pastime was spending time with her family and talking about her children, grandchildren, and city/community happenings. She enjoyed reading, keeping up on politics, and loved her Mariners, Seahawks (and the Colts!), and any sport/team her grandchildren were playing. Her favorite places in the world were the Oregon/California coast and the Pendleton Airport. She is survived by her husband, Normand (Norm) Marks; children: Dawn Kinnaman (Scott), Janelle Lubbes, Tawnya Lubbes; and step-children Norm Marks (Sandy), Shanna Marks (Guy Wilcken); nephew, Glen Champney; grandchildren: Alex Lovell (Zach), Hailey Kinnaman, Zona Kinnaman (Julian Blackmon), Drew Fischer (Theresa), Layne Weaver (Landon), Meghan Stensby (Justin) and Geoff Marks (Korrie); and great-grandchildren: Zella Blackmon, Henry Fischer, Tessa, Kensington and Ivadelle Stensby, Londyn, Linkon, and Layton Weaver, and Dakota Marks. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, September 18, at Zeyer Funeral Chapel, 83 N Midland Blvd in Nampa. The service will be live streamed for those who cannot attend in person (https://www.zeyerfuneralchapel.com). A Celebration of Life will be held in Pendleton, Oregon at a later date.
