Dennis Paul Charters

Dennis Paul Charters, 76, of Melba, Idaho, passed away peacefully in his sleep in the early morning of November 19, 2022. Dennis was born on June 20, 1946 in Nampa, Idaho. He was born to Harry Charters, Jr. and Fern Smith O'Malley. Dennis attended Melba Grade School, Junior and Senior High. He played football and rodeoed throughout high school while being raised to ranch and farm. Dennis was drafted July 6, 1966 and served through 1972 for the Idaho Army National Guard. On May 2, 1975, Dennis married the love of his life, Linda Tyson. Dennis and Linda's 47 years of marriage reflected true love, hard work, commitment, and Dennis's perseverance of never giving up on life. Dennis joined Jack Burke to start the first little league football program in Melba. Many outstanding men of today were shaped by his coaching and direction to make them the best they could be no matter what they were doing. He was a member of the Elks in Nampa for 55 years and a member of the American Legion in Melba for 49 years. His passions and devotions were also reflected as a member of the Idaho Cowboys Association and a parishioner of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Melba. Dennis was a board member for the Melba Community Auction and was known to drive to many houses to sell Auction tickets. Dennis' commitment to the community of Melba was recognized as he was awarded Citizen of the Year during the 4th of July Parade. Dennis spent many years supporting Danny and Linda as they participated in Wilson Butte 4-H Club as Danny showed his horse and his steer. Dennis and Linda were members of the Idaho Quarter Horse Breader's Association and the American Quarter Horse Association as Dennis supported Linda's love for showing quarter horses. Together, they attended every football game and basketball game as Danny played through school. Dennis had many friends in which endless shenanigans were played on. Whether it was honking horns in the middle of the night in a driveway, questionable golf play at Centennial Golf Course in Nampa, or up town at the Morning Coffee, the level of the shenanigans could be measured by his giggle and a few choice words. Dennis's good buddies were always thinking ahead to get back at Charters and their storytelling is priceless. Dennis had a sweet smile, a cute sense of humor, and he wasn't afraid to tell you he loved you. For Linda and Dennis's 25th anniversary, he bought Linda a beautiful anniversary ring which he referred to as costing "5 cows". While Dennis had the biggest heart, he wasn't afraid to tell you how you did something wrong. Working for Dennis in a field or at the feedlot were no easy tasks. Anyone who had those opportunities understands the feeling of being yelled at for backing up a trailer into a pickup, the significance of missing a few rocks in the field, not changing siphon tubes fast enough, startling the cows, and yet...we survived it all and loved him more. Dennis had a dream of building a home at the waterfalls, and his work ethic, dedication, and again, his spirit of never giving up, provided the framework for he and Linda to see that dream through. Dennis had a vision and every inch of their property had a purpose in which it provided refuge for family, friends, and animals to come together to embrace the joys of life. It was heaven on earth for both of them. Dennis's last trip to town was embraced by an early Saturday morning sunrise, a horse's whinny for it was time to be fed, and temperatures cold enough to freeze the beauty that surrounded his home. This moment of time captured the gratitude and thankfulness his family and friends have to have been part of such a good man's life. Dennis was preceded in death by his grandfather and grandmother, Harry and Gladys Charters who he treasured and had the fondest of memories for; father and mother, Harry Jr. Charters and Fern Smith; brother, Kenny Charters; sister, Teresa Hetzler (Charters); nephews, Tommy Jr. Charters and Russell Charters. Dennis is survived by his wife, Linda Charters; son, Danny Charters; Grandchildren, Tyler Charters and Jessica Charters; Brother, Tom Charters (Jeannie); brother, Dan Charters (Candy); many nieces and nephews. We are especially thankful for Dennis's hospice nurse, Darcy. Her sincere compassion and grace were felt by all. She is a blessing. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Legion #126, PO Box 32, Melba, Idaho, 83641. All are welcome to the viewing on Friday, November 25th at Zeyer's Funeral Home in Nampa from 6:00-8:00 PM. A service will be held at Melba High School Commons on Saturday, November 26th at 1:00 PM followed by a military graveside then a celebration of life early supper at the Legion Hall in Melba.
