David Stephen Leary was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on February 4, 1943 to Frank Leary and Leila Wright Leary. David was raised in the Cedar City, Utah area until he was 14 when his mother brought David and three younger brothers to Blackfoot for a visit. When it was time to leave there was not room in the car for David, so he was left at his aunt's home.David went to school until they came to Blackfoot and then he never went back to school but started working instead.David married Verna Hancock and they had a daughter Jennie (Dowdle) and one son Michael Leary. After David and Verna were divorced David met and married Karen Ward and they were parents of Todd, Scott, Daniel and daughter Tina. They were divorced in 1990.While married to Verna, David became a police officer with the Blackfoot Police Department and served as Bingham County's first ever official jailer. After 10 years David started working at INEL on the Arco desert and retired after 30 years. While working at the site David attended a single adult church dance. At the same dance was one Kathleen Hillman. The first thing that Kathleen noticed about David was that he had the ugliest pair of cowboy boots she had ever seen, however when Kathleen looked a little closer at the wearer she thought a good looking man like that, that wears ugly cowboy boots must really need someone to take care of him, and so two months later on November 6, 1993 David and Kathleen were married in Pocatello, Idaho and on June 21, 1997 they were sealed in the Idaho Falls Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After David retired from the site, he opened a bike shop and was very happy to spend his days repairing and refurbishing old bikes. He and Kathleen also officiated in the Idaho Falls Temple for four years.Between David and Kathleen, they have eight children (Kathleen has two sons Bryan and Cory Madsen) 25 grandchildren and 3 living great-grandchildren.On June 21, 2013 (yes, on their Anniversary) David had a massive heart attack and had to close the bike shop.David was a very loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend.David passed away peacefully in his sleep February 6, 2021 in Nampa, Idaho. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, February 12 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 11288 Roosevelt Ave in Nampa, with a viewing from 10 to 10:45 AM prior to the services.
