Jay Ashton passed away peacefully at Aspen Transitional Rehab in Meridian, ID surrounded by his family on March 29, 2022.Jay was born on March 26, 1941 in Blackfoot, Idaho to Charles Ellis and Dora Grace Ashton. He was the second of four children.He attended Marsh Valley High School located outside of Arimo, ID. In school, Jay enjoyed playing basketball, boxing, and also playing in the band and pep band.While in high school, Jay joined the National Guard. After high school he received training at Fort Ord, CA, Fort Knox, KY, and Fort Lewis, WA. He served in the guard for 10 years, which included the time he served a two year church mission. He was discharged as a Sergeant E6 and was awarded Soldier of the Year his last year of service.Jay served a two year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Eastern States which included New York and New Jersey. He participated in the Cumorah Pageant as a trumpeter announcing the beginning of the pageant. He also served as a guide at the Sacred Grove. His highlight was meeting Richard L. Evans. Jay began his career with Farmers Insurance Group in 1964. He worked as an agent for 27 years and a District Manager for 18 years. Jay married Junell Sorenson, August 30, 1963 in the Idaho Falls Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They were happily married for 58 years. Junell was the love of Jay's life. He and Junell served a mission for the Church assigned to the Philippines from 2008-2010. They served a second mission to the Philippines from 2012-2013. They were released early due to Jay being diagnosed with a brain tumor. Jay had an incredible work ethic. He was extremely kind and very giving. He loved to see others smile and especially laugh. He had an amazing sense of humor. He loved to tease, tell jokes and pulled many good pranks. We already miss Jay so much.Survivors include, his wife Junell; his eight children: Tina Ashton, Lisa Ashton, Teresa (Paul) Sinner, Tonya (Morgan) Ririe, Bryce Ashton, Bryan (Leesah) Ashton, Jamie (Rich) Conrad, Jennifer (Jay) Bantz; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; his 3 sisters, Jeanette (Herman) Beunning, Loretta Hamilton, Ranae (Dale) Hammond.Funeral services will be held at 12:00 Noon, Tuesday, April 5, 2022 and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 18486 Middleton Road, Nampa. The family will greet friends from 11-11:45 AM prior to the services.
