"A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent." --Boy Scout Law Steven Frank Hummer spent his life living by these words and values. He peacefully passed away on November 30, 2018, of Alzheimers Disease and symptoms of Parkinson's, in Meridian, Idaho, surrounded by his family. A lifetime active Scouter, Steve was an Eagle Scout, and he received, among other awards, the Silver Beaver and the National Veteran's Award for 65 Years of Scouting. He helped countless young men, including his sons and grandsons, achieve their Eagle Scout award. He served in many Scouting positions, and his favorite was Scoutmaster. Steve was born on December 18, 1939, in Seattle, Washington, where he lived until he was eight. He spent the rest of his youth in Woodinville, Washington, and graduated from Bothell High School in 1958. After high school, he attended the University of Washington and later received an Associate Degree from Bellevue Community College and graduated with a Bachelor's of Science from Brigham Young University. Steve was in ROTC in college and enlisted in the Army National Guard where he served six months active duty and several years in the reserves of the 241st Signal Battalion. In 1968, he married his sweetheart, Kathleen Fitzgerald, and in 2018, they celebrated 50 blessed years of marriage. Most of their years of marriage were spent in the Pacific Northwest where their four children were born. After they both retired, they moved to Nampa, Idaho, in 2005, to be near children and grandchildren. He was greatly beloved by his family and enjoyed nothing more than spending time with them. Steve spent his career of over 40 years with Puget Sound Energy as an Electrical Power Engineer. Nicknamed "Smiley," he was known for his strong work ethic and friendly, diplomatic personality. He was a volunteer with United Way and the Special Olympics and also gave many workshops to schools on power safety. A convert and devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Steve spent many hours of service on several local missions, a worker in the Seattle LDS Temple, a Genealogy Family History Consultant, and many other church callings. A lover of the great outdoors, he spent many hours hiking, fishing, hunting, swimming, and playing tennis. He loved to travel, and he and his wife visited many countries, often pursuing family history and genealogy opportunities on these trips. Steve is survived by his lifelong love and wife, Kathleen, of Nampa, Idaho; two daughters, Heidi Williamson (Kent) of Kuna, Idaho, and Monica Larson (Adam) of Snoqualmie, Washington; two sons, Brent Hummer (Shannon) of Ammon, Idaho, and Ryan Hummer (Anita) of Hong Kong; 15 grandchildren and one great-grandson; and his brother Dirk Hummer of Richland, Washington. He was preceded in death by his parents Frank W. and Thelma Hummer. Funeral arrangements are by Zeyer Funeral Chapel, (208-467-7300). Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, December 8, 2018, at the Melba LDS Ward Chapel, 112 Randolph St, in Melba with a viewing from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the Church prior to the services. Interment will be in Seattle, Washington.
