Shannon Grunig

Shannon Grunig, age 86, died in her home in Nampa, Idaho on May 27, 2022. She was born February 9, 1936, and raised in Montpelier, Idaho, the daughter of Sherman and Helen (Dayton) Dunn. Shannon graduated from Montpelier High School, Class of 1954. Following graduation, she worked as a telephone operator for the local telephone company. Shortly thereafter Shannon met and married her true love Ronald Franklin Grunig. After marrying, Shannon and Ron moved to Nampa for Ron's job on the railroad, but Montpelier was never far from her mind, and they moved back soon after. It was in Montpelier that Shannon raised her two children as well as had a successful career at the local Hospital as the office manager. As her children grew, many camping trips were taken in the Idaho Mountains to hunt, fish and just relax. Some of the best times were spent with family camping, fishing, and visiting at the Montpelier reservoir. One of the best stories of Shannon's outdoor prowess came on a Sunday hunt for elk with Ron. As they drove through the beautiful mountains of Idaho that day, a large bull elk walked in front of them and into the field. Shannon asked Ron, "What is that?" Ron explained, "That is what we are hunting!" The rest of that day was a story told around the dinner table many times. Shannon was skilled in all crafts and especially the art of crocheting. She would create all manner of items. One of her favorite pastimes was to sell her handcrafted wares at local craft shows. She loved visiting with the customers and helping them pick the perfect item. It was this craftiness that led Shannon to be given the job of decorating the clubhouse in her Idaho community, Gold Crest and in her Arizona Community, Sunwest. She managed this fun activity for many years. She was meticulous in her preparation and every month she had a theme, whether it was the Fourth of July or Halloween, Shannon had the clubhouse looking the part. Shannon was also very active with the Red Hatters, she eventually became Mother Queen, the leader of her group that would run the meetings and organize fundraising, luncheons and parties. She truly enjoyed dressing in her favorite red hat and matching attire. She always had a big smile on her face as she raced off to the lunch party with the ladies. Shannon and Ron became snowbirds after retiring, they purchased a home in Casa Grande and spent their winters in Arizona and summers in Idaho meeting lots of great friends and enjoying a wonderful life together. Shannon was always thinking of others, she had a card for every occasion and made sure everyone in her vast circle would receive one. She never forgot a friend, niece, nephew, sister, brother, uncle or aunt. Even after her stroke she would make sure a card was sent! Shannon was a wonderful wife to Ron and mother to her two children. She loved seeing her great granddaughters and would call regularly to make sure they were brought over for a visit. She is survived by her children, Craig (Eneida) and Jacci (Brandon), her grandchildren, Zach (Miranda), Andrea (Shane), Mason and Caleb and her great granddaughters Sloane and Zoey. Family was everything to Shannon, she was selfless, loving, and always making sure everyone was taken care of. She will be missed very much by all who knew her.
