Mary Maynes Jones

Mary Maynes Jones, 83, passed away while surrounded by family members early Saturday morning, February 3, 2018. She was born in Butlerville, Salt Lake, Utah to John Alexander Maynes and Sarah Louretta Despain Maynes on April 11, 1934 at the family farm located just off Wasatch Boulevard - close to Big Cottonwood Canyon. Mary is the youngest of 10 children with 8 brothers and 1 sister. Her brothers helped her mother raise her after her father died of the flu when she was 6 years old. She was baptized at age 8 as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was actively involved the church all of her life. At the age of 9, she contracted polio and was bedridden for 9 months. She never let the effects of polio limit her involvement in the church, temple, or with her family. She loved to sing. She was invited to sing with the Tabernacle Choir, sang in a dance band, and enjoyed being in many choirs including the Glee Club and Sweet Adeline. She met LeRoy Richard Jones in Seminary during high school. While LeRoy was serving a mission to Hawaii, she attended the LDS Business College and became proficient using a comptometer and worked at First Security bank. Mary greeted LeRoy when he arrived home on April 4, 1956. They were married two months later in the Salt Lake Temple on June 7, 1956. They made a goal to visit the 12 temples that were built or under construction at that time. They met that goal and went on to visit a total of 71 temples including the following outside of the continental United States: New Zealand, Hawaii, Swiss, London, and Alberta, Canada. Mary & LeRoy have served as temple workers since 2001. They have six children: Brenda (Alan) Stoddard, Bremerton, WA, Ruth (Steven) Bascom, Auburn, WA, Dixie (Rod) Limb, Meridian, ID, Arlin (Susan) Jones, Boise, ID, Jay (Tami) Jones, Meridian, ID, Devona (David) Sebastian, Middleton, ID. They have 43 Grandchildren and 51 Great-Grandchildren with 5 more on the way. She has lived in Boise, Idaho; Butlerville, Utah; Delaware; Fort Ord, California; Fry (Sierra Vista), Arizona; Manchester, New Hampshire; Meridian, Idaho; Midvale, Utah; Munich, Germany; Ozark, Alabama; Salt Lake City, Utah; and Scofield, Utah; Mary served in the church in many capacities, wherever she was asked including: Primary, Relief Society, Sunday School, Young Women's, Genealogy, Indexing, and Social Services. Mary & LeRoy served together in the New Hampshire - Manchester Mission in 1997. 39 descendants have served missions in the following areas: Alabama, Arkansas, Boise, Brazil, California, Chicago, Chile, Dominican Republic, Japan, Mexico, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New York, New Zealand, Nova Scotia, Peru, Romania, South Dakota, Texas, Thailand, Ukraine, Virginia, and Washington. Her influence has been felt across the globe. Mary and LeRoy opened their home to many guests through her involvement in LDS Social Services and the Indian Placement Program. When they first married, they thought they might have twelve children, but after six children, Mary said that she had the first six, so it was LeRoy's turn to have the second six, which they more than accomplished by the many guests they invited into their home. Mary partnered with LeRoy in his many ventures to support the family, including Service Station, Restaurant, Laundromat, Dry Cleaners, and Roy's Milkshakes at the Western Idaho Fair while being a stay-at-home Mom with six children. They enjoyed spending time with their family gardening, canning (apricots, apples, cherries, pickles, peaches, beans, beets, elk meat, jams, jelly, onions), freezer corn, juicing grapes (a favorite), making butter, camping in the mountains (Sage Hen Reservoir), taking trips together to visit family, family reunions, and visiting the Salt Lake Temple Grounds while their children were young. In her later years, she continued to go camping in a wheelchair, attending weddings for her grandchildren, and baptisms for her great-grandchildren. She always enjoyed having the grandchildren and great-grandchildren come for a visit. She greeted them with a smile and a 'dum-dum' sucker. Her greatest desire is to have her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren come to know the Savior and prepare themselves and their families to be together forever. Mary is preceded in death by her parents, seven of her brothers, Darrell (Goldie), John (Jeanne), William (Connie), Lawrence, Alden (June), Robert (Verla), Gaylen (Shirley), and a granddaughter, Heather Marie Limb. Mary is survived by 140 descendants and her sister, Marna (Lloyd-deceased) McGee, Brigham City, UT, and brother, Fred (Coleen) Maynes, Cottonwood Heights, UT. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, February 10, 2018 in the LDS Chapel at 190 S. Locust Grove Rd (South of Franklin) in Meridian.
