Luther Montgomery Maddy Jr.

Luther Montgomery Maddy Jr. passed away at home on August 15, 2021. He was born in Massieville, Ohio, August 15, 1932. At the age of 18, he hitchhiked alone from Ohio to San Francisco to seek his fortune. He was hired by Trans World Airlines and soon his family followed him to California. There, Luther met Pearl, his future wife at church. When the Korean war broke out, Luther joined the Navy and served on a destroyer. Pearl and Luther were married January 11, 1957 after he returned from the Navy. Luther completed barber college and he and Pearl eventually moved to Salinas, California where they operated a furniture store and barbershop for more than 30 years. They retired in 1995 and moved to Nampa, Idaho, to be with their two children and four grandchildren. Luther purchased a building in Caldwell and opened Maddy's Plaza, which he managed until selling it in 2021. Luther is preceded in death by his wife Pearl of 63 years who passed away in 2020, his sister Doris, and brothers Richard and Daryl. He is survived by his sister Maxine, his son Luther and daughter Lavada as well as four grandchildren, Eric, Andrew, Michael, and Michelle, and four great grandchildren, Thomas, Mia, Lilyana, and Gianna. Luther was politically active and served as a member of the Republican Central Committee while in California and continued to contribute to conservative political causes. Luther was loved by many and went out of his way to help people, most of the time. He was generous, almost to a flaw, with those who rented from him and he felt a kinship with those who needed a little extra help to get by. His favorite Bible verse was John 3:16 which he quoted loudly when anyone asked about his spiritual condition. Luther lived a full life and impacted many. He will be greatly missed, but is now reunited with those who have gone before him.
