Wayne Allen Henderson passed away peacefully the beautiful morning of April 18, 2016 at his Meridian home with his wife Shirley by his side. Wayne was born April 10, 1932 in Glenns Ferry, Idaho. The first born of Dallas E. and Iona E. (Allen) Henderson. Although there were many opportunities to work hard, Wayne enjoyed an idyllic childhood spending endless hours playing and roaming with cousins and uncles who were close in age. His father's railroad job brought the family to Nampa where Wayne graduated from Nampa High School where he participated in football and basketball. He was a member of the 1950 State Championship basketball team which was also undefeated in the season. It was a favorite high school memory. In 1951 Wayne proudly joined the Marines and served in Korean War where he made some lifetime buddies. Wayne met the love of his life and his bride for eternity at a softball game. He married Shirley Mae Russell on May 26, 1954 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Their first home was in Caldwell, ID where they had their first 2 daughters Shirlayne and Susan. Following a move to Burley, ID they were blessed with the arrival of a daughter Tamara and a son Michael. In 1968, Belden Sherman at age 8, joined the family and was adopted by love. Belden brought a rich Native American culture to the family. Wayne worked for many years in the car business. He was a natural salesman. He won many awards and vacations for being a top salesman. He loved hunting, fishing and any sport that involved a ball. He worked many nights officiating baseball, basketball and football games. Wayne gravitated from officiating games to being a spectator at high school and grandchildren's ballgames. He especially loved watching Rocky Mountain high school games and his many buds in the Meridian area. It became his retirement passion. He was a fixture at both girls and boys state high school championship games. Thank you to his family and many friends who so generously gave of their time to take him to the games. You gave him such joy during a difficult time of life. Wayne was a promoter of people, especially young people. He enjoyed supporting them and seeing them succeed in life. He "never met a stranger" so therefore he had friends where ever he went. Wayne and Shirley had an annual tradition of vacationing in Western Montana, close to the Madison River. After several years with other couples it became a family tradition. It was a highlight of Wayne's year. For Wayne, the more kids, grandkids and great-grandchildren that were able to come--the better! Wayne was affectionately nick named by his grandchildren as "Wayner". He knew he was loved and adored by his grandchildren and great grands which brought him great joy. He was blessed to have a wife who loved and cared for him after he received a diagnosis of dementia. Wayne was a great example of enduring to the end with a happy and full heart. Wayne had faith in God's plan and the redeeming power of Jesus Christ. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus of Latter-day Saints. His favorite calling was serving with young men. Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings, Maxine Little and Doug Henderson; a son Belden Sherman, Sr.; grandsons Tyler Wayne Henderson--his name sake and Cody Hayes; granddaughters Jessica Henderson and Katie Kotter. He is survived by his wife Shirley; daughters: Shirlayne (Ernie) Corder, Sue (Doug) Hayes, Tammy (Mike) Greiner; and son Mike; 15 living grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews whom he adored; and several cousins and many dear friends. Funeral Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, April 23 at the Baldwin Park Ward LDS Chapel, 4505 N. Linder Rd in Meridian. A viewing will be held at the church Friday, April 22 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. and again at the church, Saturday from 2:00 to 2:45 p.m. prior to the services.
