Dale Wayne Harker

Dale Wayne Harker, 84, passed away Sunday, November 29, 2015 at his home in Nampa, Idaho. He was born August 13, 1931 in Shelley, Idaho to Wayne Clair and Docia Mae Dial Harker. Dale walked, rode a horse or skated on the canal ice to get to school. In 1945, when he was in junior high, the family moved to Idaho Falls. He graduated from Idaho Falls High School in 1950. Rather than wait to be drafted, Dale enlisted in the United States Navy from 1950-1954 and was stationed at Crows Landing, California where he traced bomber statistics. Dale met Verla Willyerd and they were married in 1953 in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. After being honorably discharged from the Navy Dale attended Ricks College. While there he received three athletic scholarships for football, track and baseball and was awarded the Freshman Athlete of the Year. He further pursued his studies at BYU where he graduated in 1958. He taught grade school a year in Dugway, Utah and then another year in Idaho Falls. Dale moved his family to Nampa where he taught science and coached sports until drivers education became part of the district curriculum. He was the driving instructor for 31 years at West and South Junior High Schools. He also taught in Caldwell and Boise and taught drivers training instruction at BSU. Dale was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many positions as well as serving in the Boise Idaho LDS Temple for 11 years. He played softball on city leagues and loved sports. Other favorite diversions included antique cars, eagles and music. During harvest evenings he found relaxation in plowing fields or driving truck. Dale was known for his jovial disposition and always lending a hand. He will be missed for his faithful kindness to a world of friends. Dale was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Betty. He is survived by his wife Verla; daughter Gail (Fred) Dachenhausen; brother Ronald C. Harker (Joyce) and sister Tess Nelson (Marlyn).
