Leona Mae (Hume) Simmons was born in Nampa, Idaho on April 15, 1930, to Marshall and Juanita (Ashcraft) Hume. She passed away at Elegant Assisted Living in Pocatello, Idaho on the morning of November 7, 2020, at the age of 90. She grew up in Wilder, Idaho, and loved spending her days out on the farm; following her dad and cousin around, and dressing up her kittens! She graduated from Wilder High School in 1948 where she was a Wilder Wildcat cheerleader. She sure loved to dance! Right out of high school she attended Links Business College for a year, about the same time she met her future husband, Garth Lee Simmons. They were married in the Baptist church in Wilder, Idaho, May 5, 1949 and were later sealed to each other in the Salt Lake Temple of The church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on November 30, 1953. Leona spent her days taking care of the household in Nampa, Idaho and raising four children: Gary, Mary Anne, Kent and Bonnie. She kept busy serving others in many different leadership roles within the Church. She knew no strangers, everyone was her friend. She worked many years at the KUKU Dairy Queen near the high school and loved the friendships she made there. After retirement, they served a 1 year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, as well as serving almost 20 years as Ordinance workers at the Boise Idaho Temple where they made a lot of lifelong friends. They enjoyed working alongside each other doing sprinkler jobs and annual fishing trips to Alaska. Leona was preceded in death by her son Gary Lee Simmons and Gary's wife Jackie (Meyer) Simmons; and her brother Jerry Lee Hume. She is survived by her husband, Garth Lee Simmons; her three children: Mary Anne (Mike) Oswald, Kent (Angie) Simmons, and Bonnie (Milt) Greenwood; Her brother Charles Linton Hume; as well as 14 grandchildren, and 28 great-grandchildren. Leona couldn't wait to be reunited with her parents, she surely will be missed by all! Funeral services will be held at 11 AM, Thursday, November 12, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 3904 E. Greenhurst Rd in Nampa with a viewing from 10 to 10:45 AM prior to the services. Burial will take place at 1PM at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Caldwell.
