Sachiko Edwards was born January 27, 1929, in Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan, to Tonekuchi Nagao (father) and Tonei Matsuzuka (mother). She was the youngest of four children: brothers Hideo and Wakeo, and her sister Misaokida. She married Roland (Ed) Edwards at 24 years old in Japan. They moved to the United States December 8, 1955. The boat sailed from Yokohama to Alaska and then to Seattle, Washington. She described her boat ride as "one of the worst experiences of her life" because of her sea sickness. After a couple of months of living in Connecticut, Roland got a job in Idaho and they settled in Marsing. They had four boys at the time of their divorce in 1967. She began working hard at teaching herself English and attained her citizenship in 1968, which was one of her proudest moments. Soon after, she started work in the local onion and beet fields, Bowman Produce, and eventually retired from Simplot, where she worked for 14 years. Sachiko loved and adored America and she made Idaho her home for 60 years. She had a deep love for her yard and garden, as they brought her tremendous pride and joy. She loved to keep them tidy and always had the most magnificent irises, daffodils, and snapdragons. She was also skilled at "Ikebana", or the art of Japanese flower arrangement, making sushi and sashimi, and origami, which she absolutely loved.Sachiko will be remembered as an awesome mother, grandma, and friend to many. She loved to feed everyone. You couldn't walk in her house without being offered a snack, drink, or a full meal. She was also known to love Sumo wrestling and would often watch it with her son, John, over the phone. She traveled back to Japan with her son Andy in 2004 and was able to visit her family and meet new family members. Her brother Hideo came to visit her in 2005.She made many local Japanese friends over the years and was loved for her humble and sweet demeanor. She adored having company come to visit and she would always make sure to walk her guests out to the car and wave them good bye with a gigantic smile on her face.Sachiko is survived by her sons: Bill, Reggie, John, and Andy; her 14 grandchildren, and her 30 great-grandchildren. We are very grateful to the Swan Falls Assisted Living staff for the tender care and attention that she was given while under their care until her passing.
