Garth Lee Simmons

Garth Lee Simmons, 93, of Nampa, Idaho, passed away Sunday, April 18, 2021. Our beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather was born on October 23, 1927 to John and Mary Ann Simmons. He was one of five boys born to John and Mary Ann. His mother passed away when he was just eight years old. Garth grew up in the Heber/Charleston area where, as a young boy he loved to race is favorite horse. At just 14 years of age, he would take a team of horses into the hills all by himself to pull logs out. Another favorite past time was sledding down the hill at the Charleston Cemetery and dodging headstones. After graduation, Garth moved to Idaho to work with Clifford Adamson at the Adamson Pump Company. In 1946 he joined the Army Air Corps. After he was discharged, he returned to Idaho where he met the love of his life, Leona Mae Hume. Garth and Leona were married on May 5, 1949 and then were sealed for time and eternity in the Salt Lake Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on November 30, 1953. He worked and retired from the Union Pacific Railroad after 35 years of service as an Engineering Inspector. Garth and Leona had four children, two boys and two girls. Garth was a life-long member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He loved the years he spent in the Boise Temple serving alongside his wife, Leona and their mission to the Salt Lake Genealogy Library. Garth never met a stranger. He would talk to anyone! He was an extremely competitive person at everything he did. He loved playing, coaching, and most of all winning at basketball and softball. He also loved hunting and fishing! He always looked forward to the Fall when his Utah brothers and their boys would join him in Idaho to hunt pheasants. Both he and Leona looked forward each year for the past 30 years to their Alaskan salmon fishing trips. He was determined he was going when he turned 90 because the resort gives a free trip when you turn 90! Garth was constantly helping others with their pumps or sprinkler systems. He was 90 and still out taking care of his "elderly" ladies and friends. Garth is survived by his brother, Darwin Simmons; his three children: Mary Anne (Mike) Oswald, Kent (Angie) Simmons, Bonnie (Milt) Greenwood; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, John & Mary Ann; his wife Leona; three brothers: Weldon, Verlin, and Don; and his son, Gary Simmons. The family would like to thank the staff at Streamside Assisted Living and the Hospice staff for their tender care at the end of his life.
