Carrol June Waller Newby

Carrol J. Waller Newby, 92 of Nampa passed away Saturday, February 9, 2019 at Ashley Manor care center in Nampa. She was born December 21, 1926 in Bowmont, ID to Wm. Lee and Jennie Messmore Waller at the home of her grandparents. She lived in Bowmont until the age of three when they moved to Nampa. She attended Roosevelt Elementary, graduated from Central Jr. High and in 1945 from Nampa High School. By 1947 she completed a course at Northwest Nazarene College which earned her a Teaching Certificate. During these school years she was also employed by various places of business in Nampa, including Woolworth's, Rosann's Dress Shop, Ward's Market, Save-Mor Drug, The Golden Rule, and House of Fong Cafe. She began her teaching career in 1947 in Wendell, ID. She then taught at Eastside Elementary in Nampa and in Ontario, OR. By 1955, after seven years of teaching and many more college classes at various places, she finally received a Bachelor's Degree from N.N.C. Carroll married Karl T. Newby on January 31, 1955 in Nampa. They immediately moved to Ogden, UT where Karl was employed with the railroad. Carroll taught in the Ogden School District for 20 years and also completed her Master's Degree from Utah State University in 1960. A special highlight during her years in Ogden came in 1959 when she received the first annual Rotary Club Distinguished Teaching Award for an elementary teacher, having been nominated by parents of her third grade students. In 1975, she and Karl returned home to live in Nampa where she again taught for another 10 years, finally retiring from Sunny Ridge Elementary in 1986, ending a career of 38 years. After retiring, she helped design and decorate their new home. She and Karl enjoyed their home, some travel, living among family members and being active participants at the Nampa Rec Center. Sewing, knitting, arts and crafts, home decorating and reading were all long-time areas of interests for her. Carrol was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since 1963. She served in various church callings since that time. She was also a past member of Delta Kappa Gamma teacher's sorority, the American Association of Women, and the Nampa Civic Center Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Karl; and her brother Bill Waller. She is survived by her sister-in-law Kay Waller; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law Neal and Margy Newby of Nampa; another sister-in-law Joyce Newby of Twin Falls and various cousins and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 16 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 121 N. Canyon St. in Nampa with a viewing from 12 to 12:45 p.m. prior to the services. Arrangements by Zeyer Funeral Chapel, Nampa 208-467-7300 Condolences may be expressed at zeyerfuneralchapel.com.
