Arlene was born in Giltner, Nebraska on Oct. 7, 1925. The 1933 Dustbowl which swept through the mid-west forced an 8-year-old Arlene and her family to board a train for a 2.5-day journey to Caldwell, Idaho. Once settled in Idaho, Arlene attended Homedale Schools where she played softball and graduated from Homedale High School in 1943. She worked at the Dairyman's Creamery in Caldwell after graduating. Arlene married Gerald "Pete" Ulrich on July 27, 1944, shortly before Pete deployed for the Pacific theatre of WWII. They made their residence in Nampa where they were blessed with two sons, Steve and Jay. Arlene attended nursing school at Samaritan Hospital in Nampa and prior to receiving her LPN degree, Dr. Fred Helpenstell visited the school to hire a nurse for his growing practice. Arlene was highly recommended by the instructors, and needless-to-say Arlene ended up working more than 20 years for Dr. Helpenstell. Upon retirement Arlene and Pete spent there winters in Las Vegas where they golfed and adventured. Arlene enjoyed spending time with friends and family, whether it was a round of golf, playing cards (pinochle, solitaire, and especially spoons with the grandkids), bowling, sewing, crocheting, and cooking; her hands were always busy. Arlene loved her family dearly and is survived by sons Steve (Lora) and Jay (Alaina); sister Shirley Olsen and brother Dick Brock (Judy); grandchildren: Amy Ulrich, Matthew Ulrich, Danielle Nelson, Jeremy Ulrich, Stacy Fuller, Jodi Lewis, Brock Ulrich, Tim Ulrich, Stephanie Obendorf, and Michael Obendorf; 23 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald "Pete" Ulrich and parents Cort and Hattie Brock. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to a favorite charity.
