Mary Pauline Coine Hayward

Mary P. (Coine) Hayward, NAMPA, Idaho -- Mary Pauline (Coine) Hayward, better known as Polly, passed away in the early morning hours of Feb. 28, 2020, at Sunnyridge Retirement Home, Nampa, Idaho. She was born Sept. 14, 1923, in Tonkawa, Oklahoma, the middle of five children, to Forest and Oleta Coine. Her father worked the oil fields and at an early age, their family transferred to Kansas where they remained. After high school, Polly did a short try at nursing and even though she decided against it, she was in the right place to meet the love of her life, Alvin Hayward, who, in 1943, was stationed at a base in the area. After a whirlwind courtship, they married Feb. 4, 1944. She was 20, he was 28. Not long after, Alvin was sent overseas to fight in WWII and Polly was left alone. She worked at American Optical until shortly before their first daughter, Maribeth, was born and she went home to live with her parents. At the urging of her husband, Polly and her 5-month-old daughter boarded a train and headed east to live with her new mother-in-law, Ruth Hayward of Marshfield, Vermont. It was a hard and lonely time but in 1945, Alvin returned. They moved to Kansas for a year but the Green Mountains beckoned them back and they settled in Marshfield where their family grew by two. Susan came along to give Maribeth a playmate and seven years later, Janis made their family complete. Polly was a stay-at-home mom until Janis was around five, then she worked a couple of years as a cook for Marshfield Elementary, then went to work for Sprague Electric in Barre, working there until retirement. After two years of enjoying their home in Marshfield, in the fall of 1989, they started a new adventure, packing everything up and moving to Nampa, Idaho, to be near their oldest daughter, Maribeth, and her family. They bought a home and enjoyed each other and their new life until Alvin passed away in 2012, he was 97. Polly continued to live in the house for two more years but decided she was lonely and wanted to be around people so she moved to SunnyRidge Retirement Home where she resided until her passing. She was predeceased by her parents, Forest and Oleta May Coine; two brothers, Forest Jr. and Bill Coine; and one sister, Connie Evans; her husband, Alvin, of 67 years; a grandson, Seth Mould, and granddaughter, Ruth Hulse. She leaves behind her sister, Betty Sawyer and husband Jack of Wichita, Kansas; daughters: Maribeth (Fred) Mould of Nampa, Idaho, Susan (Cliff) MacAskill of East Barre, Vermont, Janis Hayward and partner David Billings of Montpelier, Vermont; grandchildren: Valerie (Mark) Ouimet, Bryan (Tara) MacAskill, Leah Couture and partner Marcus Baer; several great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren; also, too many to count nieces, nephews and extended family whom she loved dearly. There will be a joint burial for Polly and Alvin in early June in Eaton Cemetery in Marshfield, Vermont.
