Karl T Newby (94) of Nampa, passed away of natural causes on Monday, June 13, 2018 at Ashley Manor Senior Living Center. He had only resided there for a short few weeks; however, he devotedly visited his wife Carrol Waller Newby (she survives) each day at Ashley Manor as she has been a resident for a number of years. Karl was born on July 13, 1923 to Van J. and Laura May Morgan Newby in Nampa. His large family consisted of four brothers (Morgan, Reid, Jack and Neal) and one sister (Shirley). He graduated from Nampa Senior High School in 1942 and immediately entered the Army Air Corp. While Morgan served in the Army in Europe and Reid in the Navy Seabees in the South Pacific, Karl was stationed in Guam as the crew chief on the B-29 bomber "City of Chicago" in the 19th Bomb Group, 28th Bomb Squadron. All three brothers served in WWII simultaneously and came home safely. Karl was honorably discharged at the rank of sergeant in 1945.Karl married Carrol Waller on January 31, 1955. For most of their married life, he worked as a conductor on the Union Pacific Railroad, first out of Ogden, Utah, and later out of Nampa. At the time of his death he was a member of the Nampa 11th Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. During his life, he was blessed with a prodigious memory and was known for recalling many life experiences (especially from the war), names, and dates. He was a good conversationalist because of his stories, his strong opinions on effective investment strategies, politics, taxes, Medicare documentation, and lawyers. To those who did not know him well, his demeanor may have seemed somewhat cantankerous, but little children and all those who loved him saw the twinkle in his eye and knew of his soft interior.Karl was a devoted husband who has cared for his ailing wife for most of the last decade. At the same time, he helped in the care of his sister Shirley as she struggled with Alzheimer's, often taking her on long drives and even enjoying an automatic car wash where Shirley inadvertently opened the automatic car windows, thus cleaning exterior, interior and themselves all at the same time. Surviving Karl are his wife Carrol, brother Jack (wife Joyce) of Twin Falls, Idaho, and brother Neal (wife Margy) of Nampa along with a large number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Morgan (wife Goldie), Reid (wife Dorothy), and his sister Shirley Wrenn (husband Jack). The family wishes to thank Serena Williams and all of the ladies at Ashley Manor for their help and assistance in the care of both Karl and Carrol. A viewing will be held on Monday, June 18, 2018 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Zeyer Chapel in Nampa. A graveside ceremony will be held at Kohlerlawn Cemetery on Tuesday, June 19, 2018 at 2:00 PM.
