Ray Phillip Petterborg

Ray Phillip Petterborg, 90, of Nampa passed away Friday, November 25, 2016 at a local hospital. Ray was born April 4, 1926 in the log home of his parents in Glendale, Idaho, a small farming community northeast of Preston. He was the fourth of eleven children born to Guy and Cecilia Petterborg. He attended grade school in Glendale and graduated from Preston High School. Soon after graduating he was drafted and served in the U.S. Navy. Ray was known as "Bud" during the early part of his life. After his discharge in 1946 Ray worked with his father on the family farm and attended Utah State Agricultural College, where he graduated with a degree in vocational agriculture. He married Norma Ann Swainston on March 21, 1952 in the Logan L.D.S Temple and went into active military duty with the U.S. Army at Fort Lee Virginia. After leaving the military again, he taught vocational agriculture in Lund, Nevada for three years. During the summers Ray worked for Kennecott Copper Company at Ruth, and for the U.S. Forest Service. Ray then went to work for the Bureau of Indian Affairs as a conservationist and worked with the Northern Cheyenne Tribe. He transferred to Lapwai, Idaho, living in Lewiston, and finished his career there as Natural Resources Officer for the four northern Idaho tribes. Ray and Norma served two full time missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, one in Arequipa, Peru and one in Quayaquil, Ecuador. They moved to Nampa, Idaho after their missions. Ray served in many positions in the L.D.S Church. Out of all his service he most enjoyed working with the deacons quorum and scouting, as well as the 15 years of service in the Boise L.D.S. Temple. He served for four years on the Lewis-Clark Council of the Boy Scouts of America and for many years as a merit badge councilor. Ray liked to fish, working in his garden, traveling, and being with his family. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers; three sisters; and two grandchildren.
