Betty Evelyn Chandler

Betty Evelyn Chandler passed away in Nampa, Idaho May 22, 2016 of natural causes in her home, age 91 years. She was preceded in death by her husband D. Wallace Chandler; her parents Ora and Jessie Hampson; two sisters Polly Hampson Hudson and Maxine Hampson; and grandson Nicholas Chandler. She was born July 6, 1924 in Caldwell, Idaho. Her family moved many times, wherever work could be found, from the Treasure Valley to Weiser, Idaho. She said that she did not attend the same school two years in a row until they moved to Weiser where she met Wallace. Her parents were very frugal and hardworking with her mother making their clothes, growing a garden, and trading with neighbors to meet each other's needs during the depression. She and Wallace made their home in Nampa. Six children were born to them: Vicki (Jerry) Anderson of Homedale, Rick (Karen) of Nampa, Connie Read of Nampa, Judy (Jeff) Tuft of Nampa, Wendy (Bruce) Schneider of Sacramento, and Thad (Kathy) Chandler of Nampa. She and dad were hard workers and provided well for the family. They raised a half acre garden on their acreage and she canned hundreds of quarts of fruits and vegetables each summer. The family moved to Homedale in 1955, where our father had purchased a small meat-packing plant near the Snake River. She said that in spite of the long hours of working in the business, it was the happiest years of their marriage. Our father passed away in 1968. Our father had sold the business and the family had moved back to Nampa before his passing. She found a job working as a cook at East Canyon Elementary School to provide for her, Wendy, and Thad. She worked there for 22 years before retiring. Betty became a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in her early adult years, with Wallace already being a member and the family was raised in the church. She served in many capacities as a teacher and leader, with her love being teaching children, which she did for over 20 years. She served in the Boise LDS Temple for the first two years it was open and then spent much of her time caring for her aged mother for many years until her passing. She then helped other family members care for her sister, Polly until she passed away. This is the legacy of Betty Evelyn Chandler: Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Faithful service and caring for her family and hundreds of others throughout her life. Her life was one of happiness, compassion service, and work. She was very independent because she was capable and did not want to be a burden to anyone. She deeply loved and enjoyed her large family of six children, 60 grandchildren, 104 great grandchildren, and 16 great-great grandchildren. She had a keen and alert mind, with an exceptional memory, until recently, and loved to tease family and associates right up to her last day with us. Her absolute favorite holiday was Christmas for commemorating the birth of Our Savior, Jesus Christ and for all the lights, trees, and decorations which, to her, represented the joy and the Light of the World. She loved Christmas trees and would have a number up in her home. She would buy small decorative trees made from different materials. Her grandchildren soon began buying unique trees for her and her collection grew to around 150. We are very appreciative of those from Legacy Hospice and Home Health Care for all they did for her. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 27 at the LDS Chapel located at 121 N. Canyon in Nampa. A viewing will be held from 6 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, May 26 at Zeyer Funeral Chapel, 83 N Midland Blvd, Nampa (467-7300) and at the church Friday from 1 to 1:45 p.m. prior to the services. Condolences may be expressed at zeyerfuneralchapel.com
