Gean Shumway Hurd, 94, of Fruitland, Idaho, passed away Saturday, February 6, 2016, in Nampa, Idaho, in the home of her daughter, Sandra, who lovingly took care of her the last few months. Gean was born on June 15, 1921, in Dueschene, Utah, to George Alonzo and Goldie Elizabeth James Shumway. She was greeted by her four older brothers Todd, Frank, Ceril and George and later joined by her younger sister, Susie. Gean's father died of typhoid fever in Nampa when she was only four, and she was sent to Bountiful, Utah, to live with her Grandma Susannah Jolley Shumway, who later adopted Gean and her siblings. When Gean was in second grade they moved to Fairview, Wyoming where she lived until, at age 16, she married DeLos Anderson "Dee" Hurd on December 6, 1937, in Montpelier, Idaho. Together they raised six children: DeRay, Valjean, Sandra, Roger, MKay and Glen. She worked hard as a homemaker on the farm and occasionally out of the home. She enjoyed sewing all of Sandra's dresses, even through Sandra's teenage years. They lived in the Star Valley, Wyoming area for most of the first part of their marriage, and moved to Boise in 1945. The family enjoyed camping together and going back to Star Valley each year to visit the relatives. In 1961 they bought a 120 acre farm in Wilder, Idaho. Everyone had to pitch in and help Dad farm. Later, the grandchildren enjoyed riding the horses, riding the tractor with Grandpa and trying their hand at milking the cows! After Dee retired from Idaho Power, he and Gean enjoyed traveling in their trailer and spending the winters in Yuma, Arizona. In 1993, they sold the farm and moved to Renton, Washington to be closer to Sandra and better doctors, as Dee's health was failing. A few years after Dee passed away in 1996, Gean and MKay bought a trailer and enjoyed traveling with DeRay and his wife, Veyanne. They ended up living in Fruitland, Idaho. Gean was a very loving mother and grandmother. She was famous for her homemade bread, frozen chocolate-covered bananas and her salmon sandwiches served with ice cream! She loved when the grandchildren came to visit her, and treasured family reunions. She really enjoyed camping, being in nature and reading. But most of all she loved her family! Gean was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and enjoyed going to the temple to be sealed to her family for all eternity. Her family would like to thank the members of the Fruitland 1st and 2nd Wards for their service and friendship. She always looked forward to your visits. Gean was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and all her siblings, including her half-brother, Roy Moore and two half-sisters: Hazel Moore Harris and Barbara Moore Dipple; grandson, Aaron "Ron" Goff; son-in-law, Dale Bailey; and daughter-in-law, Veyanne Hurd. She is survived by a sister-in-law, Margaret Shumway of Renton, Washington; all her children: DeRay of Caldwell, Idaho; Val (Jeanne) of Payette, Idaho; Sandra Bailey of Nampa, Idaho; Steve (Alex) of Port Orchard, Washington; MKay and Glen of Fruitland, Idaho; 16 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, 14 great-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Gean will be laid to rest with Dee at the Riverside Cemetery in Payette, Idaho. Mother, Grandma, we love you and will miss you!
